5 Important Safety Welding Tips You Should Observe

Admin • May 05, 2020

In any welding project, you should observe safety at all costs. Know what kind of precautions you need to take before embarking on any welding job. You are required for your own safety to read and understand the instructions of the manufacturer, dress in proper gear, wear protective gear, and ensure you always have access to clean air.

You face an array of hazards if you ignore the safety guidelines. These hazards can be potentially dangerous, including fumes and gases, electric shocks, fire, and explosions.

1. Wear Safety Glasses, Gloves, and Apron

You can be burned when operating the welding machine as the welding arc is very hot. Wear flame-resistant gloves to protect your hands and wrists from the flame as well as cuts or scratches.

Wear safety glasses if you cannot afford an industrial-grade helmet. Safety glasses will protect your eyes from particles that fly out of the working area. It should have side shields to prevent sparks from getting onto your eyes.

You should not wear shorts or short-sleeved T-shirts when welding, no matter how small the job. Wear clothing and an apron that is flame-resistant. The clothing should be tightly woven. You can add a welding jacket as it provides enhanced protection.

2. Be Aware of Fumes and Gases

Avoid being overly exposed to fumes and gases as they are a hazard to your health. Fumes from welding can contain harmful metal compounds. When you have too much exposure to the fumes, this can cause irritation of the airways, asthma, or bronchitis.

Thus, keep your head away from fumes by ensuring your work area has enough ventilation. To ensure proper ventilation, you can set up a fan and an exhaust system to carry away the fumes and gases from the working area. The exhaust system should be close enough to the working area. Do not stand in between the exhaust inlet and the fume.

3. Protect Yourself From Electric Shock

You are at risk of electrocution from the live electrical circuits that create a pool of molten metal. Electric shock can cause serious injuries and fatalities from the shock itself or from falling from height after the shock. You are also at risk of experiencing secondary electric shock should you touch a part of the welding circuit at the same time while touching the metal you are welding.

To avoid electric shock, you should:

  • Not work in damp conditions
  • Not wear wet clothes
  • Wear insulated gear when around metal flooring or structures

These can help you avoid the dangers of electric shock.

4. Be Aware of Fires and Explosions

During welding, the heat and sparks produced can cause fires or explosions. Observe basic fire prevention and protection precautions for you to be safe:

  • Inspect the work area for any flammable materials and remove them if found.
  • Ensure the extinguisher gauge is available and full. If not available, ensure you have access to sand buckets, fire hoses, or other equipment that extinguishes fires.
  • Have a fire watcher to keep track of sparks.
  • Remain for at least 30 minutes in the working area after the welding job.

These can help protect you and your environment from dangerous fires or explosions.

5. Protect Yourself From Noise Hazards

You are likely to experience loud, prolonged noises from welding activity. Welding activities such as air arc gouging and flame cutting can produce hazardous noise of over 100 dB(A). Hazardous noise is damaging to the ear, which can result in hearing impairment. When you have regular exposure to this loud noise, it can cause hearing loss. Wear protective earbuds that block loud noise.

Most Popular Types of Welding

Are you hiring a welder to get something fabricated or repaired? Sam's Welding Inc. offers the following types of welding in El Cajon: Gas metal arc welding. Perhaps the most popular of them all, this method is also known by its abbreviations GMAW or MIG, for metal inert gas. It’s an average of five times faster than electrical arc methods and includes four material transfer options: spray, pulsed spray, globular and short circuiting. Shielded metal arc welding. A form of stick welding commonly known as SMAW, this process uses electrical current to form an arc between the rod and metals in production. Uses include industrial fabrication such as the construction of iron and steel structures. Gas tungsten arc welding. This method is known as TIG or GTAW and requires the most skill, as heat is continuously regulated by means of a foot pedal. If amperage is set too high, you can end up burning holes in the metal. If it’s too low, the weld won’t flow properly. It’s especially useful for combining thick pieces of stainless steel and ironless metals. Flux-cored arc welding. Unlike MIG and TIG, FCAW keeps contamination out by means of a flux. This process doesn’t require a shielding gas, can be done outdoors and is quite efficient. Working with different positions such as horizontal, vertical and tee joints requires different machine configurations.
